One of the great things about my new position as Tech Coach, is learning about new and exciting websites, apps and gadgets. There are some really great resources out there and as you might guess, some not so great. Either they are not a great fit for schools, inappropriate, or cost a small fortune. However, I have discovered an app/website that is quickly become one of my all time favorites, SeeSaw.
SeeSaw is an online student portfolio. It checks off all the things I like when evaluating an online source. It is useful on multiple levels, safe, and basically FREE!
SeeSaw is useful on so many different levels. For students, it allows them to demonstrate their learning on their specific portfolio page. Students can create a video describing how they discovered an answer to a particular problem. A teacher can take a photo of his or her students on field trip to share. Students are also able to record just their voice as they read a passage. For teachers, they have great evidence of learning taking place throughout the school year. For parents, the biggest reward of all, you get to witness learning taking place more regularly in your student’s classroom. You no longer have to ask, “What’d you do in school today?”. Now your conversation can be more like, “I see you’re reading the book….”
SeeSaw is very safe. All posts by students have to be approved by the students’ teacher. Parents only see what is posted to their child’s portfolio. The class is protected with a special code only the parents of the class may use. Finally, the teacher approves who is able to join her SeeSaw.
Last but not least, SeeSaw is basically FREE! I know, basically, but really for our purposes at ACSD it is. SeeSaw does come with some flashy extras, but for now it’s not needed.
